Beach ride in Northumberland

On Sunday 21st of May 2000, three Highlands and a friend met at Druridge Bay links to enjoy a leisurely beach ride, the first such event to be held in our very widespread area.

Early misty dizzle soon cleared to give patches of hazy sun, just enough to add a sparkle to the glorious scenery as we set off along the open stretch of sand. The ponies soon settled and were all very well behaved, allowing the riders plenty of time for chatting. Luckily they are all well used to being ridden on the beach and no one even hinted at trying to roll, a favourite trick on warm days!

The thunder of Highland hooves was heard as we cantered on, and then much splashing as we went for a "plodge" in the sea. All too soon we reached the top of the bay and decided to head off into the dunes, returning to base via the tracks which run at the back of the beach.

Those taking part were: Claire Booth on Duncan of Alltnacailleach, Gillian Booth on Woodspring Hamish, Diana Slee on Gregor of Birnam and Lynsey Dalton on Purdy (non Highland). Carol Warwick, another enthusiast, joined us for the picnic, bringing some most memorable cakes for us all to enjoy as we relaxed in the sunshine, the ponies contentedly munching on grass beside us.
